Hi

Basically at the moment I've got a BTWIN Triban 500SE cracking little bike, but things are starting to go wrong with it and I think its time to upgrade. When I bought it in August, I didn't think I'd be out on it as much as I am (150miles a week).

Anyway ive decided to go for a Ribble R872 and im going to throw some carbon wheels from planet X on it. Ive also chose to go for Ultergra but confused about all the choices of numbers it gives you? :/ my usual riding is about 3,000ft of climbing around Ruthin/Wrexham area, so if somebody could point me in the right direction in terms of numbers with the groupset also is it worth £300 odd more then the 105 groupset? the if anybody has any other suggestions as im still a newb.

Cheers

Ultegra (mechanical) is absolutely not worth it over the new 5800 105. They are pretty much identical. I find it really bizarre Shimano have done this.

3,000ft in what sort of mileage. For hilly riding I'd rather have light weight ally clichers than deep section carbon. The 105 5800 is not listed in the bike builder its the older 5700(10 speed) so is the 11 speed ultegra worth an extra £200? not sure I use Campagnolo. Not sure what your budget is but if i was looking for new bike theres other places I'd look first namely Canyon and Rose. I've nothing against Ribble I've got a New Sportive Racing and love it. It was my first carbon roadbike and I've had loads of good rides on it over the last 2.5 years but I've a bit more knowledge now and would be a bit more particular with my choice of bike next time (next summer). This Canyon looks great has the 11 speed Ultegra and Mavic Kysrium Elite wheelset.

Or this one with 105 11speed.

It's usually about 30-40mile, I like the look of them canyons specially the aero version. Budget is around 2k mark, I want a bike that if in a year or 2, if I fancy joining a club and amateur races then the bike is completely up to it just weighed my current bike and its 11kgs which I guess is pretty heavy?

I say pretty much any bike fine at 2 grand, best pick by looks and try before you buy. That's the prob with ribble and also canyon in my opinion.

How about an Orro? Shop in Wrexham sells them? Awesome lookers and very light..

Out of interest, what frame warranty are say Rose and Canyon giving ?
I seriously like my New Sportive Racing (Veloce and Fulcrum 5s)...but only a 2 year frame warrany isnt much. Ive had no problems 2.5 years in, but it wasn't very comforting knowing after that time, I'm on my own.
I've often seen people recommend upgrading at a later date, say the wheels. To me, whats the point of buying basic wheels, upgrading later will only cost you again. Buy right the first time IMO..its cheaper.

I recently bought a Ribble R872 and choose the Campagnolo group set and have to say I think the bike is fantastic for the price although Ribble customer service is another story altogether. I'll leave it to the experts on here to explain the difference in equipment and make suggestions as I'm also pretty new to biking and enlisted the help of a seriously quick local biker to help me choose the components and specs.
