I have had a ridgeback 604 mountain bike for 16 years and its still going strong.
A mate of mine has a flight from 2009 and its still going strong.
The ridgeback range are distributed by Madison, who don't usually stock rubbish.
Just make sure you get fitted correctly before you buy.

My university is using these for student loan bikes, and they come with positive comments.
Also, I ride a Ridgeback Platinum and it's been great this year. Ridgeback also make Genesis bikes as well.

When I decided earlier this year to sell my mountain bike (Trek 6500) so I could get something more road-orientated for commuting, I ended up picking up an old 2010 stock Flight 01 from my LBS, equipped with triple chainset and Sora rear mech. Save for a few punctures and wearing out the original brake pads, it's been reliable and quick, and it's a fairly light and well specced proposition for the money IMHO. The lack of a suspensions fork and the skinny 28s were a culture shock at first, but I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed the 1800 miles I've done so far on mine

I bought a Flight 01 2010 model from my LBS - reduced to £360.
It's not much heavier than my roadbike (approx 11.1Kg) and the gearing is quite high at 52 and 12 so you can really motor down hills.
Quite a versatile bike with a triple chainring and fast for the money though cannot comment on the heavier newer models with disc brakes and different gearing.

I like my Alfine 8 hub gear and Shimano SLX disc-equipped, shiny black Flight 04. I got it second hand and it's taken some hard commuting miles in filthy weather these last three years. It goes and goes without too much maintenance. It can handle heavy loaded panniers, it's a great commuter and is nippy and fun enough for pleasure. I changed the saddle it came with quick enough to a charge spoon as it was a harsh ride. The new saddle helped a lot.
