Would a rigid 29er like the Kona Unit or the Cannondale Bad Boy 29 make a good commuter bike?

I like the idea of bigger wheels for commuting, and was pondering a new bike purchase.

On road commute or off road?

29er wheels are just another name for 700c aren't they so doubt the wheel size would make a difference, more the choice of tyres and weight of the bike.

If I was in the market for a new commuter, I'd go for a CX bike that could take mudguards and a pannier. That would be lighter and quicker than a 29er, but robust enough for light off-road trails.

I thought 29 were larger wheels than 700.
I may be wrong.

Checks.

Yes, I was wrong.

Thanks!

I used to use a Kona Ute as my daily ride, advertised as 700c wheels but were definitely 29ers. Most comfortable bike I've ever owned, and not exactly slow

Wheel is the same size, but 29ers often have podgy tyres with high sidewalls, so the overall wheel/tyre combo is often a bit bigger.
