I'm kind of surprised he was only 71. He seems to have been around forever.

RIP

Certainly one of the biggest crowd pullers back in the day. I also expected him to be older by now. I was more into WCW than WWF but his face was on every wrestling magazine cover, VHS cover etc. Wrestlers do seem to go early though, I wonder if it's the training regime or was he one of the "clean" trainers?

Even as a kid I couldn't watch it. WWF all seemed so obviously fake, even to my young naÏve eyes. ☺️☺️☺️

This is something that I'd class as a phenomenon among the older UK generation. As a family in the 80s we used to watch British wrestling (Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks etc) and my Dad, my Mum and my Mum's parents would be well into it. Yet when I started watching WCW in the early 90s, they used to say "what a load of rubbish". It's all clearly all of the same ilk i.e. mostly rehearsed, and they know who's going to win and when. But it still takes some training and skill to pull of the moves that they do and not break your neck.

So I wouldn't call it fake as such, and certainly Giant Haystacks took great offence at some reporter suggesting it was and promptly choked him, but it is certainly planned entertaiment by very athletic individuals.

I appreciate the ability to put on a show and yes, ok, 'Fake' isn't the right word, but that is just what I saw as a kid when it was BIG at my school in the early '90s'.
I used to even have arguments about it with people, I mean, how can you leap off something like the ring's edge, miss your target, totally face - plant into the ground and then recover so quickly as if nothing had happened. Likewise, land on someone's head, etc, but they recover as if it's the most ordinary thing ever and so on.

I previously used to watch 'Big Daddy', etc, yes, but I was still too young to really notice things properly at that age.
