I met James Herbert and his family once. He was dressed in white and pale as a cracker. A really nice family.
His wife told me that while he was writing a book he would live in the basement from start to finish, she would take his meals down and leave them outside the door, which explained his pallor.
Sad that he has gone at 69 which is not so old by today's standards.

Read a lot of his books in my teens/early 20's re-read a lot last year and his new one "Ash" RIP James

You should read Rats his first and in my opinion his finest, Spear and Survivor very good as well

Read some in my teens – The Spear and Fluke were my favourites.
I saw one of his books advertised in the last week or two and wondered how old he was – thought he must have been a lot older than 69.
Reginald Hill one of my favourite authors died last year.
Reginald Hill was a far better writer than most people think. Some of the Dalziel books are extraordinary. I didn't get on with any of the Joe Sixsmith ones, though, and some of his one-offs, like the Long Kill, were pretty pants.
I quite liked 'Death of a Doormouse' – he was a brilliant writer – I was lucky enough to read all the Pascoe and Dalziels in the order they were written. The fact they were detective books was almost irrelevant, quite wonderful stories about the relationship of two blokes who worked together. In my opinion they were much better than the Morse books (although I enjoyed all of them).
