There are guide books available for the Rhine route - I've got a couple and intend doing the ride next year (but as a 'there-&-back' ride.)

There is a coach with cycle trailer that calls at Basle, but I can't remember the firm's name - European cycle tours or something?

WJ, if you're thinking of the European Bike Express it no longer does the Swiss/Italian route (Nancy in France is the nearest). Otherwise, short of flying oneway, the easiest option is probably to take the City Night Line train from Amsterdam to Basel (Amsterdam-Brig route) and cycle back - there's a signed cycle route more or less all the way on either or both banks of the river.

Edit: managed to mistype Amsterdam twice (and differently each time)!

I am looking to do a tour next year, possibly from Lake Constance (via Basel to Rotterdam/Amsterdam) When are you doing it/ over how long?

You need Vols 2 & 3 of Der Rheinradweg guides by Bikeline (Pub: Esterbauer). The text is in German but the mapping is excellent and that is what you need the books for. They also list accommodation, by town at the back as well as showing shops where you can get your bike repaired etc.

As for the route itself, it is good fun and not arduous. Personally, I would avoid staying in the bigger cities (except for Düsseldorf which is excellent) and stay in any town which has an Alstadt (old town) or in any of the wine villages/towns between Bingen and Koblenz. The latter is also a nice place for an overnight stop.

I didn;t find the Northern Rhein that pleasant a ride. It was quite hemmed in, with roads and railways by the side. The south - I rode from Freiburg round past Basel, was very nice, if a bit rough in places (sandy, gravelly track). Be aware it might be better the other way round.

Following the Rhine is not the only possibility. There are a couple of Dutch bike routes through France to the South. See here: http://www.cyclingeurope.nl/
You can use the routes to Rome, Barcelona or Venice, or a combination of them. The text will be in Dutch, of course. Most also have gps tracks, I think.

I followed the Rhine, very easy route (though did get lost when i had to take diversions so a map will be needed)

The Esterbauer guides are great even if you don't speak German, they are worth it for the maps. Vol 2 Basel to Mainz and Vol 3 Mainz to Rotterdam.
