One of the biggest criticisms that is hurled at cyclists is that we tend to jump through red lights all the time. This is simply not true, there are plenty of cyclists that don't RLJ. But this thread is not about cyclists RLJing, but motorists instead. Yesterday I saw 3 motorists, one of whom was a professional driver barrel through a red light controlling 3 way traffic at some road works as if it wasn't there.

Btw the taxi belongs to a company called Fareways Taxis and I have their address. Just wondering if I should write a letter of complaint given that the evidence is not that clear. The taxi passed through the red light, but the camera didn't pick up on it as it was mounted on my handlebars and I was at the junction when it had happened.

You'll catch them speeding and using their mobiles next.

There's a difference between seeing them doing it and actually 'catching it'.

Footage doesn't look good enough to do anything with, though. Sort out your mounting!

Had someone in an MX5 with a Christian fish sign on the back in front of me on my way in this morning. Lights had a LONG amber stage as it's before a fairly large junction with three lanes of traffic about to cross in front. He wasn't slowing down. Lights turned red. He still wasn't slowing down. Gave him a long blast on a recently refilled airzound as I did NOT want to be late for work having to give a statement as a witness to a massive pile up. Still went straight through - fortunately nothing bad happened.

Was sure I could come up with the greatest scathing remark with a "what would Jesus do?" related play on words or some kind of feaux biblical quote but sadly he got through the next traffic lights on green and I got hit with the red and lost him.

Of course, you know why nothing bad happened to him don't you....

Send a letter of complaint - these bastard motorists think they can get away with murder just because they pay road tax.

Something tells me you're on to a loser with this vid, great shots of the sky though with a quick glimpse of the traffic every so often.

I am experimenting with fixing the camera to the handlebars. It is fairly tricky to get the angle right and this is my first proper road test with the camera mounted on the front like this. From the raw footage, it is pointing too high.

The advantage of having it on the bars is that I will be able to get the registration plates if set correctly. However, it does suffer in lack of range that I would have mounted on my helmet and there is a problem of transference of road vibration.

there is no way of telling from that footage if they had just turned red or if they had been on red for a while.

Plenty of people sneak through at the end of those kind of systems because they don't want to have to wait 5 minutes for the temp lights to change, I do it myself

When people complain about cyclists RLJing they tend to be talking about those who sail through in the middle of a red phase. I see plenty of cyclists doing this, but you hardly ever, ever see a car do that. Cars do plenty of running through on amber and the first half second of red, but it's cyclists who take the piss and go through in the middle of the red phase

You can't tell what is going on in this video...

Sensible post...that's exactly how I see it.Didn't really know how to put it though.

I'd like to suggest a bit more rigour in the cutting room - I feel that putting this sort of footage is fairly pointless because it's not possible to see what happened.

I agree with that, it is difficult to tell the phasing of the lights from the footage. However, from my own personal first hand account I can tell you that the lights were red for a good few seconds and that there were 3 cars that RLJed. The 3rd car you cannot see on film and it was the first one through the red light, the others just followed.
