Road bike build help and advice

So after toying with the idea I think I'm going to go down the route of building my own road bike.

Would like to hear of anyone else's experiance on doing so and if they feel this is a good way of going about it instead of just buying one.

I think I'll get a good sense of achievement building my own and maybe even save some £.

Looking to buy a full carbon frame or an aluminium with carbon fork set. Would like the frame to accept disc brakes also as staying in scotland they definetly have an advantage over blocks.

Feel free to make any suggestions on frame sets and so on.advice or any info on problems that may occur along the way would be apriciated.

It's all straight forward, if you get any problems you tube is your mate. Nice to build to your own spec.

Unless you use second hand parts you wont save money. If saving money is not the reason to build then go ahead.. it's a very rewarding exercise.

Not really bothered about the saving money would just be an added bonus just want the experiance and the achievement of doing so really

It almost certainly will be more expensive but you get to spec the bike as you like.
I'd also look at CrMo steel frames, someone on here built up a Planet X Kaffenback that looked lovely for a disc braked road bike.

Have built up a cheap winter hack in the past...managed to get a lot of the parts second hand it and it worked out quite well (and quite cheap!). Think it would have worked out quite expensive though if building up something with more quality. At the end of the day, if it's experience more than cost saving...have a go!

It is more about the experiance I'm thinking if I build a bike ill definitely know how to fix a bike sort of thing and it would be nice to own one I've built myself. The added bonus is I can make it exactly how I want it. I guess one of the bigger decisions is which frame I'm going to go for and then I can start building around it.
I was going to buy one which would mean an initial outlay of cash but as it's back to dark and rubbish weather being glasgow I thought why waste that much money at once buying one I may get little use of over the next few months when I can use the one I have and build another ready for the hopefully better weather next year. Means I still spend the money but over a longer period of time and I get the sense of achievement and a bike built to what I want.

I've built a couple. If you have a modicum of mechanical sympathy it's not hard. All the steps are easy to find on line. Just remember to measure twice and cut once

There are a couple of specialist tools you may need to buy, and it's worth getting decent quality esp cutters.

on the money side I did manage to save a fair bit, but I took my time and sourced parts as they were available cheaply. The likes of planet x, ribble and Merlin occasionally sell components at a much reduced rate, if you can wait a decent saving can be made.

You could always strip and rebuild your current bike, would be cheaper than a new one.

I like the mechanical side of things. And I will take your advice on tools and parts as i'm not in a huge rush. I've givin myself untill next Feb to complete which should be long enough

The current bike is only a few months old and is a cx which I wanted for winter and the commute so happy with the way it is and should serve the purpose I need it for

I have built a couple. As said it isn't cheaper, but you do get a sense of satisfaction and you can end up with a unique bike. I love seeing people look at my bike and thinking what is that? Even asking and complimenting it's looks.

I'm not sure on frames yet but ill do a bit or research over the weekend see what I can come up with. And it's mostly for the achievement and sheer pleasure I'm sure I'll get out of doing it that I'm going to go for it . Oh and I like getting things in the post especially bike related
