I bought a cheap road bike off Ebay for £200 new, it is all alloy and had pretty shabby parts, I rode it about for a while as it was but then got sick and put off by of the hard gearing, torturous drop bars and seat positioning.
I began to change parts for better ones like fitting flat bars, and good gear and brake levers, a better set of Shimano 105 brake calipers and pads. The idea was from then on to attempt to convert my bike in to a sort of hybrid/tourer style to use for long rides and comfort, but keeping the same skinny 700c wheels and adding mud guards, rack and panniers.
I plan to fit a comfier seat and a higher stem to lift my bars to make the bike more comfy and achieve a better riding position for longer rides.
The gear set from stock included a front crank set of 39/53 teeth (truvativ make)
and the rear cassette of 14/16/18/20/22/24/28 (yes only 7 speed)
I plan to change this gearing as setting off is very hard work and uphills is murder, but i need to maintain the 7 speed cassette as i cannot afford new wheels or fit a 9 or 10 speed cassette in my frame.

I'm hoping that either one of these cassettes will make easier for setting off, and an overall easier ride. I also want to change the front crank for a better make like "shimano ultegra or 105" I want a more tourer/hybrid style crank that will take load and strain with preferably less that 39/53 teeth to achieve easier setting off but still a decent top speed for down hills.
Can anybody give me advice on what I am trying to do, and maybe recommend a crank for me to use. Also is there a set tourer/hybrid gear set that is good for all riding?
