Just come back home today, from two weeks in the Highlands and there was loads of road kill up there

Everything from the hedgehogs, rabbits and foxes and we even saw a Badger

Never seen a live badger, always dead ones.

Off topic slightly but last week we were out in the car and just coming up to the roundabout at the entrance to Strathclyde Park. Big roundabout, very busy with cars and trucks battering round, and my daughter says "there's a deer!". 'Yeah right' I though but looked over a sure enough! There was a young deer just standing on the grass at the side of the roundabout, about forty-feet away, just looking around. Seemed totally unphazed by the traffic. Kinda surreal.

7 squished foxes on an 8 mile stretch of the A66 to Middlesbrough this morning. We`ve got loads of them up north here. One woke me up at 3am with its spooky bark. Big problem with the bin bags on a tuesday as well ;)

You could have reported it to your local authority as they have a duty to clear it away. Quickly.

Apparently hedgehog numbers have declined markedly. I heard it on R4 last or the start of this week as have many traditional woodland/garden fauna of the British Isles.

Saw two rabbits freshly sqwitched within the space of 100yds on wednesday evening's ride. Would have had them for the pot save that my freezer and fridge are full plus I was on my road bike. Was tempted with rabbit hat and gloves for the winter as well . But instead picked them off the road and let them lie at peace at the foot of the adjacent hedgerow.

8 mile country road commute.

Typical road kill = Deer, rabbits, hares, various birds but mainly pheasant, rats, squirells, badgers, polecats,

Two squashed hedgehogs in just over two months of commuting - suburban Manchester

And, of course, quite a few (I hazard a guess) pigeons.

After over forty years of being closely involved in the observation, capture and shooting of all kinds of feathered, furry and other creatures, I have come to the conclusion that the population of particular species follows a series of peaks and troughs, not necessarily regular. I agree that this year, and last year for that matter, I have seen fewer hedgehogs around, or indeed evidence of their activity. However, in my part of the world at least, there are far more rabbits than last year, more deer and certainly more badgers. (Very few grey squirrels spotted so far this year.....not a bad thing!).

Four or five years ago, I saw little or no evidence of rabbits locally, and certainly, the falconer I sometimes accompany reported few rabbit kills.

I think many things like this in nature are cyclical and unless the decline is sustained over four or five years, then it means little other than mother nature naturally controlling numbers.

I suspect that hedgehogs will make a renewed appearance in the next year or two.

There was a radio 4 programme this morning highlighting the demise of hedgehogs in many areas for a variety of reasons - decking, too much fencing etc.
The colonies get separated and die off.

A guy from work who cycle commutes regularly picks up a pheasant that's come off someone's windscreen, they're usually still warm and always un-squished and they make a lovely curry/roast!

Friend of mine used to rely on roadkill for nearly all his meat....

He was partial to a bit of bacon though and admitted to buying that, as he said; "not to many squished bacons round these parts"

I think it all changed when he got married though.

Rather sadly I saw two squished red squirrels on my morning run yesterday. I've also been noticing loads of squished frogs. No hedgehogs though.

The expert was saying that seeing lots of flat hedgehogs was a sign of a good population so maybe that's a good omen for red squirrels.
