I have never forgotten that he was No. 41 on that famous day in Oxford.
Talk about a head full of useless trivia!

Didn’t scientist think the human body would be unable to survive a 4 min mile. Shows how quickly things change.

Sad news indeed.

The race happened well before I was born (well 18 months to be accurate) but the achievement echoed throughout the 50's and 60's with only a slight murmour of discontent from purists about the use of pacemakers Brasher and Chataway.

For all that Chris Chataway's role was to pace lap three, didn't he still finish with a personal best of his own, suggesting that his own race could be defended as a perfectly viable strategy and not self-sacrificing?

But I seem to recall that trio had made a previous unsuccessful attempt where the pacers dawdled, allowed themselves to be an almost lapped, then paced their respective laps with fresh legs. If my memory is right, Bannister himself said that in retrospect he was glad that attempt failed because it would have felt too cynical.

According to Brendan Roger’s on Radio 5, more people have climbed Everest than run a 4 minute mile so it is still a very difficult challenge even in the modern era.
