Hi Guys
On the 1st February 2015 Reece Gledhill a Scout leader from Rawdon, Leeds, set of on a epic journey to cycle solo around the world in aid of UNICEF and the Scout Association. He is totally self funded with no support or back up, reliant on his own funds and the generosity of people he meets on route. He has had no entourage following him with spare parts etc. As well as cycling, he has planned/mapped his routes, found accommodation or camped, found food/carried it all/cooked his meals. Researched all the time to find border crossings etc. written his blogs, recorded diary entries for BBC Radio Leeds and uploaded photos for us all to enjoy while we are sitting on the sofa on our laptops.
He also remembers to Skype with mum and dad when he can, so that they can have a good look at him to check he's not wasting away!
His journey has taken him along the northern hemisphere and through 19 countries and 3 continents, through cities, countryside, remote villages, deserts and over mountain ranges. The higest point being the Pamir Plateau, one of the most remote areas in the world at over 15,000 feet (4655m) above sea level. He has had the pleasure of meeting many locals during his travels and has been humbled by their generosity, especially those who have had little to give, but have been eager to share what they had. One of the highlights was meeting school children in Georgia, who after spotting him rushed out of school with a world map so that he could show them where he was from!
For accomodation, where possible Reece is using the websites 'Warm Showers', (which is dedicated to hosting touring cyclists) and 'Couch Surfing'. He has also been offered somewhere to sleep by locals, be it an outbuilding, barn or the storeroom of a shop, but for the majority of the time he wild-camps.
He has experienced all weathers, including temperatures from sub zero to 40+ degrees! During the high temperatures, the weight of the bike increases significantly due to the amount of water he has to carry! And the freezing temperatures have caused the extremities of the bike, including brake cables and gears to freeze!...causing hairy moments when travelling and discovering there is no way to stop!
Although Reece is having the adventure of a lifetime, it hasn't all gone smoothly. He's suffered debilitating illness, altitude sickness and injuries from falls and crashes. An attempted mugging and assault in Mongolia showed Reece the cruel side of poverty! His bike, 'The Kibo', has also suffered damages, breakdowns and numerous punctures! They are both returning looking very different to when they set off!
On completion of his epic journey he will have covered over 13600 miles and have been on the road for a total of 301+ days.

Reece will be arriving back on November 28th. Venue - Yeadon Methodist Church Hall. Time - from 1pm.
Quote from Reece : "Not only am I trying to raise money for charity but I am also on a mission. I'm travelling solo to these places in the hope that many people will realise that the world is not a dangerous place to go, in fact it is a wonderful place. People are generally good, hospitable people and you should not fear strangers as many people do."
Reece
If anybody would be interested in joining Reece for the last leg of his tour home that would be fantastic.
Many Thanks
Stacey
