I've got to come down to London next week and will be arriving at Kings Cross station; train due in at 18:13.

I'm looking for a route I can cycle from Kings Cross railway station down to Staines (near Heathrow).

I've only ever driven this before and that was many years ago, so any advice would be welcome.

I've started by looking at cyclestreets.net which seems to be OK

I would try and keep of the major roads where possible but its hard to keep to a direct route without some main roads for this ride.Head across central London towards Hyde Pk.........through hyde pk to Kensington High st......... straight on to Hammersmith broardway......on to chiswick high rd......Chiswick roundabout..........straight on towards Brentford.......hounslow......bedfont....dont take the A30 at bedfont but head towards ashford...then staines.Id say its about 20 to 25 mile ride.

Turn right out of the station and carry on along that road till you come to a junction called 'Hanger Lane'. Then turn left onto the North Circular following that for a good few miles till eventually you hit a junction with the M4. Then turn right onto the A4 and keep going till you get to Staines.

Alternative route - Tuen right out of the station and follow that road till you come to the 'Marylebone Flyover' come off at that junction down to the lights at the bottom and turn left onto the A5. Flow this down to Marble Arch, onto Park Lane and then down to Hyde Park Corner. From here get onto the A4 and follow it all the way to Staines.

This is probably the best route, just be careful if you cycle on the road on the North Circular. It can be a nightmare at times.

I had a look as cyclestreets earlier; they describe the route they come up for this trip with as "hostile" which is a bit disconcerting!

you would be brave or mad to cycle along the A40 (some of it on the elevated section by Shepherds Bush is classed as a motorway!!!! 3 narrow lanes all the way to Hanger lane!!!!! stick to the quieter roads, thay are still busy but you wont have slow lane traffic trying to squeeze past you on a 3 lane road

Not sure about the first route but the alternative route would certainly appeal. There's lots of alternatives, such as riding through Hyde Park and down Exhibition Road or through Hyde Park and down Kensington Road to the Broadway or go through Soho to pick up the A4 at Piccadilly or ... anyway, lots of alternatives but I'd... hmmm...

No, scrap that.

Follow the Euston Road to Euston Square underground, then left onto Gower Street, right onto Shaftesbury Avenue to Piccadilly Circus, follow the A4 to Knightsbridge then fork right at Scotch Corner onto the A315, then follow that all the way through Knightsbridge, Kensington, Hammersmith, Chiswick, Brentford (crossing the north circular) Isleworth and Hounslow to Bedfont where you pick up the A30 straight to Staines. Some heavy traffic on those roads but I can't think of anything which I'd be nervous cycling, unlike, say, the Westway.

Plan C, head due south to Waterloo and grab another train.
