Hi,

I've just moved out of London and am now in limbo until the new place is ready. I'll be staying with friends in Isleworth this week and would like to use my bike. Any route recommendations? At the moment I'm considering going via Richmond Park and then picking up my old commute in Wandsworth. Will be on the fixie though, so that might not be such a good idea, and it would be good to know a quicker way if I'm running behind schedule!

Thanks

can I suggest you pm Zimzum?

Simplest route from Isleworth to Old Street that doesn't involve the A4 (although many fixers do it) is to take the A315 to Kew Bridge, up to Chiswick roundabout, into Chiswick High Road, left at Goldhawk Road - follow the road ahead to Shepherds Bush. Traverse the well signalled roundabout and go up towards Notting Hill. Then down to Lancaster ~Gate, bear left then right to pick up Sussex Gardens. Cross the Edgware Road into Old Marylebone Road and just keep straight on to Old Street. (Slope on the approach to Islington)
Alternatively - get to Hyde Park by carrying straight on at Chiswick - into the park - out at Oxford street and follow the road ahead into Theobalds Road, Clerkenwell , then Old street...but Oxford Street is the pits ;)

Easy, draw a straight line between the two, and take the shortest route along the line, avoiding motorways or main roads.

Experiment, that's what it's all about, then when you are used to it you go and lengthen it anyway.

Are you nearer London Road Isleworth, or South Street as it makes a difference. I'm nearer the A316 so opt for the fastest route in which is 316 to Hogath roundabout and then A4 all the way to Hyde Park, there after take your pick. You'll be surprised how many bikes there are on that route.

Alternatively you could go London Road to Brentford, then Chiskwick, Hammersmith, Kensington.

Or Richmond, Sheen, Barnes, Putney Bridge, Embankment.

AVOID THE A4 !!! its a nightmare,i would go A316 to Chiswick high rd-Hammersmith broadway-kensington high st-hyde pk-then just follow yr own favourite way into the city,my route from hyde pk to the city changed all the time depending on how i felt, its nice to explore different streets on yr bike.

The A4 isn't that bad.....

Avoid it if you're not happy with big roads, but it's as safe as any other road in London.

I would go along the A4 to Chiswick roundabout (I'd actually go all the way along the A4 until Hyde Park Corner, but that's not for everyone...), then along Chiswick high st until you turn left onto the Goldhawk road.
All the way along to Shepherd's Bush, then up Holland Park road, through Notting Hill all the way to Lancaster Gate, then up Sussex Gardens, across Edgware road until you're on the Marylebone/Euston Road, then all the way past Kings Cross and Angel and down the Hill to Old Street.
Should take you less than an hour...

The old commute link in my sig line shows you the route as far as Baker Street....

Sometimes I would do the A4 all the way, but the route in the link is perhaps the most hassle free...

I do Chiswick to Shoreditch: Chiswick High Road to Hammersmith, up Hammersmith Road and along Kensington High Street, into Hyde Park opposite the Royal Albert Hall and along South Carriage Drive, back out of the park at Hyde Park Corner and along Piccadilly, Shaftesbury Avenue, Theobald's Road and Clerkenwell Road into Old Street. Fairly direct and nice wide bus lanes on Piccadilly, although when I go in (6:30am) it's not too busy.

Coming back (avoiding Holborn Circus) I do City Road, Kings X, Euston Road, Marylebone Road, Bishop's Bridge Road, Westbourne Grove, Ladbroke Grove, Holland Park Avenue, Goldhawk Road to avoid the worst of Notting Hill.
