Stopping at a friends next week in Beckenham as I'm at a conference in Canary Wharf and didn't fancy a £160 train ticket or a 6am start from Birmingam.

Decided to take the bike and have a go at a London commute, checked with venue and underground cycle storage is available.

Just had a brief look at the route on Bike Hub and excited to see I'll go past Cutty Sark and through the Greenwich foot tunnel.

Any comments or suggestions what to look out for or roads to avoid?

Thanks

2/3 so far..

All good, although Greenwich foot tunnel lift wasn't working and dragging the fully loaded bike up the stairs wasn't much fun.

Had to laugh though at the "cyclist must dismount" signs all the way up the staircase. Shame quite a few people ignored the signs in the tunnel - Nearly got taken out as was walking bike and went to walk round someone walking slower just as a cyclist came flying past standing on the pedal rolling down the hill.

Next time you could give the Rotherhithe tunnel a go instead. Be warned it is not much fun, but you can ride on the pavement as pedestrians are not allowed in the tunnel.

Hope you get back to Euston OK.

Thanks, got back Ok, although the route is planned along the river didn't work out as hit a locked gate straight away, then had to walk through next to the tower - did pretend to not see a 'no cycles without a permit' sign and didn't get questioned walking through barrier..

Almost made it but then caught in massive hailstorm about half a mile away..

Glad I tried a london commute but wouldn't want to do it too often!

BTW until Saturday next week Chiltern are charging 25p (yes that's right) each way between Marylebone & Birmingham Moor Street. You may have to book it as two return trips from London to Birmingham if you want to go the other way - but that's still only a £1. Info here: http://chilternrailways.co.uk/eveningstandard50

1hr 40 to Brum, 2hr back. Free WiFi, nice tables and power. Makes London Midland look a bit third world. Room for bikes.
