runners in large groups in shared lane, etiquette?

Does anyone here go out running in large groups?
I find the local running club tends to run in staggered groups, sometimes a few, sometimes two big groups of 15 or so people all crammed on the shared path right next to a busy 60mph + road.
For one or two runners I'll give way, slow down on the narrower track, but the big groups aren't interested in giving me any room, is there not any etiquette for large groups?

I end up being bullied off the wide cycle path and given dirty looks!
I heard one woman ask if cycles should even be on this path. (missed the signs and the painted cycle under foot....it's like meeting a bunch of people driving cars on the cycle path:tongue:!!!)

Anyone else come across this or member of a 'road' running club?

To be fair, it's not just cyclists and joggers - try going for a walk on footpaths and see what happens when a large group is going in the opposite direction.

If you're not in too charitable a mood, say in a loud voice "thank you" as each of them passes.

If they are coming toward you, stop your bike across the path and ask politely if they have seen the shared path signs, if you are coming up behind them ting your bell repeatedly. Follow up with a polite note to the chair of the running club - you should only need to do it once.

Just pull over and check them out to see if there are any cute ones. Then catch their eye and suggest possible cross-training techniques (ooer!).

I often come across groups on the shared cycle track commuting to work, if they are coming towards me it's no problem as we both move to the sides and pass each other. The problem arises though when you come from behind, no matter if you shout or ring your bell, they never hear you due to them having earphones in listening to music. Then you get those that do hear you just as your about to pass and nine times out of ten they always turn into me for some unknown reason. So my policy is, unless its a solo jogger to just go onto the road and go round them.

Shared paths can be annoying, I usually avoid them but crossing the river Forth I've no choice, bikes are banned ( by bye law) from the main Road Bridge Carriageway. My tactic there is usually slow down and be prepared to stop unless the ped sees me. I prefer the campy and SRAM wheels as the ped usually here them before they here my excuse me.
