The story has been in circulation since 2005. It is probably a cynical bit of heart string pulling story telling with a moral attached to it to exploit the sentimental and gullible . The folk at Snopes seem to think so:

Go back and re-read the story after reading the critiques, some of them harsh. Do you feel as sad? Do you feel 'taken in'? Do you still believe the story?

Yes, I now feel sad that idiots like those commenters actually exist in the world. I'd prefer more ugly cats and fewer cynical, nasty human beings.

Sorry. I'm a man who can't finish reciting "There's a breathless hush..." or "Captain my captain..." without my voice cracking; I can't finish reading Prisoner of Zenda or Rupett of Henzau because I can't read the last few pages through the tears; I will break down uncontrollably at least twice during any showing of Sound of Music; and don't even mention that station platform, cloud of steam, and "Daddy my Daddy" (there, I knew that would happen, tears in my eyes just typing that...); but this left me cold.

Cat-lover that I am, I will always say hello to a cat and make a fuss of him/her.

That story may very well be made-up, but I've seen enough cruelty to cats and dogs (and many other animals) to know that they should be treated properly: if you don't like animals, leave them alone in peace.

Pretty fu*king simple, really.

Its a shame people don't feel the same way to ugly, blind, mentally ill people that are homeless throughout the world. How many thousands of people die without a friend or anybody to care a toss what happens to them.

Being an animal lover, I can see the strings the story is tugging at. It's a sad world when we feel more sorry for a cat than a human.
