I think I killed my phone battery the same way! (Actually, I've just killed the replacement too - it only lasts about 36 hours on standby now.)

I posted this in the geeks forum too, at the same time, and its had 10 views and only one reply (thanx Yellowfang!)

My dell Inspiron 1720, is always used off the mains but once a month the cable gets knocked and it flattens the battery (usually when gaming and dies in middle of a round) but battery is still going strong and still get the full time in hours off the battery I got originally..

When a charger puts power into a battery it is stored as chemical energy in the charging process. Once the battery is full the energy still has to go somewhere, so if the battery can't store any more it goes as heat. If your charger wasn't switching itself off at the end of the cycle you would soon know about it, the battery would explode (or melt).
