For the first time this year I have been scalped, a roadie on a nice looking Bianchi with TT bars and what looked like an aero helmet came whizzing past me this morning .

In my meagre defence, I was not going that fast I was just spinning along, up a 1km drag, daydreaming about my new sunny day commuting bike sitting at home in the garage, a new 2010 Secteur Comp. Wondering why I hadn't had the time to finish setting it up last night so I could be riding it on such a lovely morning .

I would have chased him to un-scalp myself but I was about to do a u-turn at the RAB ahead and most importantly he was going far too fast for me .

Yesterday (on my nice roadie and lycra'd-up) I stopped at a junction. A chap (probably twice my age) on a MTB crossed by, riding on the shared cycle path.
We exchanged greetings and I turned left into the road, passed him, and proceeded up a slight drag for a mile, then a few twisty up's and downs for a few more miles. And stopped at another junction.
A few seconds later, the same chap scalped me!

For the rest of the ride, I kept telling myself that he'd taken a short cut ... I mean he must have? ... right?

Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that...

After reviewing video evidence I don't feel so bad now, he was really trying hard lots of rocking and rolling, obviously the carrot in front was to tempting to not give a bit more effort.
He also wasn't going as fast as I first thought, I saw him last week on the same road going the opposite way and he wasn't going fast at all.
See how he fairs when I am riding a bike 12kgs lighter than my current commuter .

There is no shame in being scalped by a racer. Those guys are in a different league.

A couple of weeks ago, a 40-something lady left me speechless when I was doing 23mph on flat road - must have been her morning training run as she didn't have any commuting paraphernalia.

After overtaking me she got to a 200m steep incline. I normally drop down a few gears, but she just stood up and flew up it.

By the time I got to the top, she was nowhere to be seen and the road is quite long and straight when reaching the summit. Made me feel so small did that.

I quite often get blokes fly past me, once I give chase they quickly slow back down to a trundle

Very poor form, I do at least pay lip service to the ideal that any pace I ride has to be sustained until traffic or lights dictate a stop (not far usually)

Does not count as a scalp if they have a bike half the weight, in full tt mode etc etc .

Ask then to stick your panniers with rack etc weighing 20 lbs or so and ask them to try it again

Do forget the full mud guards and mud flaps, the opposite of aerodynamic .

Truly BTW

I got #scalped# today. Fecker passed me with inches too

Bizarelly, I caught him up very near work after going [what I thought] was a longer route  I was taking it easy too.

On my lunchtime ride today I came across a cyclist in front that as soon as he saw me dropped gears and pedalled like the clappers. I caught him fairly easily and sat behind as he stood, looked back constantly and pedalled furiously. After slowing for a friend I bumped into, not literally of course, we picked it up a fair lick and were picking him up until he turned left towards the Daedalus estate.
Normally I don't bother but it's the way he looked desperate to get away or at least keep in front that made me sit up and take note
Still it was all good fun

Also got scalped today, going up Bath Street in the city center. A courier though, with a very lithe SS bike, no breaks etc. I was on my hybrid with pannier rack and full mudguards. Was worth keeping up with him though just to see his legs doing doubletime on the way down the hill  In all fairness I wasn't exactly trying to keep a good pace.

At least I can claim a scalp today, some guy on a brand new Eddy Merckx road bike, not very impressed with his no handed riding.
Claim them while I still can, once I'm on the racer I will have difficulty finding anyone higher up the food chain who is not a strong cyclist.

I've been riding my very shiny and fast-looking TT bike up and down the cycle path recently to get to a good place to practice riding the damn thing. I keep getting scalped on the path - trouble is my idea of an appropriate speed to ride on that path and some other cyclists' are not the same... and to start with I wasn't very confident with the bike... but the one time I was passed by a guy on a hybrid I had an awful job to catch him again...
