Nigel, don't pass up this great opportunity to praise that kid for riding, and befriend him. You two have something in common. Set a good example. Teach him about bike maintenance. He is currently fighting the same battle that all of us have experienced...no bike parking provisions. Show him your new bike. There's a chance that that young fellow will take such a liking to someone who shows an interest in him, that you'll each gain a new friend, and he may be the one to keep his buddies away from your bike, and be the one who ends up telling you whodunnit if something happens to it. See about getting the school to provide bike parking provisions.

That thought occurred to me too. And yet no-one else seemed to think like that! Makes me think I am so out of touch with life in the UK..

Only I don't want any of the kids within 100 yards of my bike. I don't trust them (if you know Alum Rock and it's poulation you'll know why). I teach them every day, I wouldn't put time into them if I wasn't right minded about them, but I know what they're capable of when there are no adults about.

I go to college in Portsmouth.

It is ok for cycling, as there are lodes of bus lanes to use....however the roundabouts are pretty nasty, and I don't think I would want lodes of kids cycling on the roads around portsmouth.

I think St Pauls had a kid killed pretty recently while crossing the road....I'll double check if it is St Pauls but certainly one of the schools around Pompy.

I think St Pauls is the one with the cathederal (St Pauls cathederal....) ..... I guess it would be difficult to get to this school without crossing/turning right over some busy roads or cycling on the pavement.

HAmpshire County Council is building a "Rapid Bus" down the offroad route to a local School in Gosport.

Although a right pain, there are a large number of kids using it to walk to school. To promote this the County Council are closing the path to pedestrians!

They will have access to the stops, but not along what used to be a busy footpath.

St Pauls School is in Paulsgrove and has an off road cyclepath apart from the last few yards.

wow....nowhere near the busy roundabouts and city centre then.

Ok then.... I can't think of a way to defend the school on this one.
