used my mtb to go to work today and the rear mech wasn't shifting. got home, cable was slack so i tried tightening it, adjusting the screws but to no avail.

it was only when i had a good look from the front that i noticed the split outer with rusty frayed inner by the head tube. ;)

quite right. it sits in the shed every day bar the occasional club family ride and when it's white underfoot.

my road bikes get all the attention and are "allowed" to stay in the house, so i'm surprised the cable was the only problem really.

Sounds like the way my Dawes Giro got treated over the last two to three years, ridden regularly but only shown a spanner when something broke. I paid the price for that recently, New chain, cassette, chain rings, rear gear cable, mudguard repair and a couple of afternoons doing the work and making the gears work properly again. ouch!
