Space X are at it again.

A Falcon 9 booster that has already flown is to be launched today. If successful, it will mark the birth of genuinely reusable launch systems, increased availability, and reduced prices.

Looking forward to this.
They've a bid in to deliver the US mail, using a similar system of re-useable rockets.

Wasn't the Space Shuttle the first reusable launch system? The shuttle itself and the booster rockets could be re-used, only the fuel tank was discarded.

Refurbishing the fiendishly complicated shuttle took many times longer than envisiged, and was uneconomical. They only plugged away as long as they did so as not to write off the tens of billions invested.

The Falcon 9 booster is entirely reusable, and designed to be so with minimal turnaround. If they pull it off it'll be hundreds of times cheaper than the shuttle, and available to fly tens of times more often.

They blummen did it! Absolutely fantastic! Apparently, their goal is to get to the point where then rocket launches, the booster lands, is refuelled, and launched the same day again if required, just like an aircraft.

Amazing

They were saying they're developing the components to go through numerous pressure, heat and vibration cycles, so the major components will eventually be up to it. I guess as well in this modern age of telemetry they'll be able to diagnose the state of electronics, pressure test pipework etc without opening a hatch.

I can see a time where they may be partially there, and the booster only goes in for overhaul every fifth flight, or tenth, or whatever.

Check out their mail delivery cruise missile!

We're back to Goddard.

The Falcon Heavy has its test flight in then summer. Space X have announced they're considering testing a re-usable second stage on that flight.
