It's a bad idea from the Government to allow pubs on service stations, but I'm sure Wetherspoons have lobbied / offered money to the correct people to get approval.

I Love Lymington in the New Forest ...

When Woollies went bust Wetherspoons wanted to buy the store premises for a pub, but lanning was turned down as it would "lower the tone" of the town.

They then got a "99p shop" in the vacant store which really raised the tone

The locals then campaigned that the shop's signs were "not in keeping with the town".

You don't have to drink and drive...

This ^^

Good for a bit of competition.
Motorway service stations are a rip off. At least Wetherspoon's will offer cheaper food and drink (coffee etc)

Fair play to 'em.

You have been able to buy alcohol for a number of years at service stations.

The good thing about this is that if Wetherspoons maintain their usual prices then it will perhaps cause the present ripoff prices at many of these service stations to come down

They're going to be lowering their standard price of coffee and soft drinks. I've not been to a 'Spoons for a while, but I remember them being super cheap in the first place. They'll be practically giving it away!

I thhink the gist is, it will force the prices of the others rip off merchants on site down to a sensible level if Wetherspoons price their stuff at its usual hight street rate.

Motorway services or rural pubs like we have around here, I never drink and drive but plenty seem to.

when i lived in rural cumbria next door to a country pub which i frequented often... I was flabbergasted at the amount of regulars who'd sink 4 or 5 pints before driving 5-10 miles home. The decline of the country pub was often discussed, and the breathalyser was the main reason they could think of

Yep, understood - I was just pointing out that if they're lowering their 'normal' prices, it'll be dirt cheap: a good thing. I just wish they were opening up at Wetherby.
