I have a bike box (cardboard box) my new bike turned up in, and an old army mate in the North of England who fancies a go at using my old bike. Can anybody recommend a low cost solution for getting it to him that doesn't involve sticking hundreds of stamps to the box? Is it Royal Mail, Hermes or something similar? I see people on fleabay asking for £30.00 postage, is that about the best rate?

The basic rate for Hermes is £24 and then about £3 for each level of insurance.
DHL have good rates too.

My local bike shop offers a bike sending service.

Handy because they will pack the bike and the sender doesn't have to wait in for it to be collected.

The OP already has a box, but it still might be worth an ask for the convenience factor.

BEWARE: Paisley Freight has a great website but they merely act as agents for TNT, notorious bike-wreckers. Pack it well and tell your buyer to inspect the carton carefully and not to be pressured by the courier and, if he has any doubt about the condition, to sign for the package as "damaged" otherwise you will have no recourse over TNT if there is damage.

Guess how I know this?
