saw him in F3 - stunning. standing at the first corner at Thruxton for the final race, the showdown with Brundle. waving my flag to support the brit. they thundered into the corner and you could see the noses of the cars dip as they hit the brakes - except one, Senna. just a fraction later, but enough. out of the bend he was pulling clear. at the end of the lap no one was close to him. i put my flag away and cheered him on.
a few years later, he was getting slated in the press as he had said no to Warwick driving with him at Lotus. i walked into MJM records in New Malden on cold, winter day. there was one other person in the shop. we stared at each other, him nervous, me stunned. he bought some tapes, or maybe CDs, i can't recall. he stood at the counter to pay and i tried to motion to the staff (i was a regular). he paid by card, an amex platinum. when the door closed i asked the guys of they knew who it was - "Mr A S Da Silva' was the reply as they read the copy of his credit card payment. "That's Senna's real name" was my response.
May 1st is up there with Feb 14th and April 2nd as days that i cannot enjoy. the days are tarnished with the loss of a hero (one is personal).
Donnington, Monaco, Estoril, Monza, Nurburgring in the saloon car race to open the circuit, Suzuka... whenever he raced, you watched. pure mastery, pure class and skill... art in motion.
i still look for him in races today - wanting to see that yellow helmet. only Rossi in MotoGP has come close in the last 20 years.
Tchau, Ayrton. Obrigado.
