One of the young students I work with has been debating buying a bike for use on campus, she's been asking my opinion on a variety, but she's not convinced whether it's for her or not. So I, very kindly if I do say so myself, offered her the loan of my specialised vita for a while to get the taste for it - or not.
It's been a drama. I don't think the vita wanted to leave, throwing two punctures in a row!! But, after a walk of shame into the shop this morning after the tube I replaced last night decided to deflate half way there, it's on its way.
I'm not sure now. I think I miss it :-(
Have you ever loaned a bike? Any regrets?
What happens if she hurts it?!

That's a very nice thing to do
Hope she looks after your bike.
I loaned Mr M my road bike a few times, ripped tape and stretched chain later I just put "road pedals" on it so he can't borrow it again

I lent a bike to a young lad from on here who wanted to try out a road bike in advance of buying one. His experience was more with hybrids. We arranged to meet up at a Sunday London ride and he didn't show at which point I started to question my ability to judge character and whether I should have taken more details than a first name and a phone number.

No bother, though, he phoned back with abject apologies, returned the bike in good condition, and went off and bought his road bike. Last time I heard from him he was doing about 200 miles a week up in Leicester (Uni) and I gather he did one of those Fridays (or not quite Friday's rides) with a few of the regulars.

My own feeling is that, while there's a risk-trust question to be considered, I can't ride my 3 bikes at the same time so why not let an idle bike be useful?

A workmate of mine quite often asks if he can borrow one of my retro road bikes during his lunch time instead of using his old mtb that he keeps at work for those lunch time rides .

So far never had any issues

Only the once, it was a fellow Glasgow Belles on Bikes that needed to borrow one for a visiting friend.
I had no worries.
A few weeks later, when I got it back, she told me they hadn't used it because it was too heavy to put on the roof rack, and her friend wasn't fit to ride anyway.
Thank goodness I take a small frame, not many prospective borrowers want a small.

I had to come home from a camping holiday in order to go back to work, leaving my husband and my bike (also a Specialized Vita) down in France for another couple of weeks (he's retired). When he got back he told me that he'd lent my bike to a German couple who subsequently arrived on site 'Well, it was just sitting there, and it saved them renting one'.

The bike was fine, but I was surprised at how cross I felt that he'd done that. It wasn't wholly because I hadn't been asked, either - I'm not a particularly territorial person, but this felt like quite a personal infringement for some reason. I don't think he'd do it again :stop:

I once lent my bike to a fellow student who was walking a couple of girls home. The idea was he walked them home then rode back and I would lock bike up.
2 hours later no sign of him or bike. I walked the 10 mins to their flat. Banged on door. Got bike back and he had to walk home.
I then got a good night's sleep knowing my bike was safe.

If I was entertaining a couple of girls I'd walked back to their place the last thing I'd be thinking about was your bike to be fair. Two hours is pretty impressive too
