A few years ago I remember stumbling across an excellent leaflet from the Institute of Advanced Motorists about sharing the road with cyclists. After a left hook near miss earlier this week I thought I'd see if I could find it again to send to the company whose van was involved. I've not found exactly the same thing but this is pretty good

Once you're on the site you'll see there's plenty of similar stuff. They also seem to have an initiative to get companies to give cycle training to staff. Have to say I'm well impressed!

Good advice.

The only problem I have with this, is the fact that I drive (like most people do) but the only reason I saw this was because it was pointed out to me on a cycling forum. Most people aren't going to see it.

Agree that most people wont see it. My idea is to send it to the transport manager at the company concerned. It can do no harm and if it gets circulated round their drivers it may just get them to ease off a bit when they're in proximity to cyclists in future.

Good for you. Would be interested to know if you get a response.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if it makes any difference ..one iota of difference... cyclists are insignificant w@@@nker5 in the eyes of toomany motorists...

lets take today's glorious fun run as an example .. outgoing to the gym no issues.. incoming back from gym.. in space of 17km.. one white van who was annoyed on dual carriageway to sound horn for 50 metres as he passes.. an absolute 20/30 something to55pot in red BMW hugely annoyed at me for being on roundabout so that he has to abbreviate his overspeed, I mean its a God given right to do 50+mph on roundabouts aint it..?? and finally a sad, fat ugly woman whose moronic expression as she looked at me .. but it didnt register that I existed as human being whatsoever .. I saw the blankness in her dull stupid eyes.. merrily accelerated into what that space that I was trying to use ...

you guys who commute daily.. are just insane really.. I really couldnt put up with main highway madness like today's on a regular basis...

One good thing I've noticed about a regular commute is that the drivers do get used to seeing you and do behave better. I notice this particularly if I leave work early - then I am many more times more likely to be beeped for taking the lane at a pinch point or riding assertively in other ways. Just to clarify, this is in Glasgow where the number of cycle commuters is fairly low.

I think it may also be true that regular rush hour drivers are more on the ball and better able to cope/deal with cyclists - though that does not include the 'school-run mums', who could all definitely do with reading the IAM leaflet.

They have quite a bit on cycling - they're even into providing cycle training for companies and employees!
