Hi Guys,

I am not keen on the Sora shifters on my Boardman and was wondering how much and upgrade is likely to cost with fitting. What should I upgrade to? I can't easily get a quote as I don't have a LBS anywhere near me, so I am just looking for an idea of cost for the moment.

Tiagra are vastly superior to sora. Are sora 10 speed? I have no idea these days. If so you should be able to pick up tiagra shifters for about £100 second hand. Easy job to fit them and the cables you have should fit.

New 2013 Sora have the same STI gubbins as tiagra and upwards have always had, what year did you buy your bike?

Also, Sora is 9 speed, tiagra I now 10 speed. Older 9 speed tiagra shifters shouldn't be hard to find though.

If its the little thumb lever gear change you don't like and want to have STI's on the bike, 2013 Sora levers can be foun online for £120 brand new. If you take them to a bike shop to fit them for you, you can expect to be charged about 2 or 3 hours labour - here in London that'll be about £35 per hour, your quote may differ. You'll probably have to spend a tenner on some new bar tape too, and they might talk you into new cables. A decent shop might do a price if they supply the levers too.

You could fit them yourself, it's not hard to do but depends on how confident you are.

I am in a similar situation. Currently have 2300 shifters but am upgrading bike to 105. Would prefere 9 speed as dont fancy the more fragile nature of 10 speed. Got the mechs but need some shifters. Anyone seen any decent quality or new 9 speed 105 shifters?
