Ok,just bought a 2013 bike with 105 groupset
Abit of background, ive been riding my old bike for the last year, its a 2008 aluminium with Tiagra from that year on it
Could anyone explain to me the experience improvement im supposed to feel with the 105 because as far as i can tell there is a negligible difference over a lower groupset from 7 years ago
Im abit fed up as i could have bought the same model Tiagra specced for 150 pounds less
I dont know why we are taken in by all this hype bullshit, yeah the shifters are marginally more aesthetically pleasing but thats about it,the derailleurs are pretty much the same

You saved half an ounce, that's all. About the same as the first sip of water from your water bottle. Any performance difference is in perception only, in my view. There is a whole industry out there whose sole aim is to persuade cyclists that the next-level-up is critical to improving their performance and enjoyment, and you are just another victim, along with millions of the rest of us.

105 looks neater over the handlebars as the gear wires run along the bars under the tape. 105 allows micro adjustment by half tapping the shifters.
A little lighter as stated above.

Put it this way .... If you bought the basic "L" model car last time, would you buy the same say 5 years later or "upgrade" to the GL?
If you say L - then you did indeed waste £150

I`m sure there is more of a difference other than aesthetics and weight . How much a difference? Who knows! I currently have Tiagra on my road bike, works great, however my next bike I plan to have 105, so will see what the difference is then. My reason for 105, the cables popping out the shifters on Tiagra whilst functional look a hell of a lot neater on the higher grade stuff. Other reasons for price differential i should add are materials in use, lighter alloy, less in the way of plastics better bearings. Whether that is worth the extra I dunno, for me 105 is propably a good balance, dura ace !! $$$$$$$$$ no thanks.

****ed off,i cant afford to waste f***ing money when the same job can be done for alot less

I've got Tiagra on my tricross and 105 on my van nic Yukon. I find the 105 more precise/accurate/crisp

I can't feel any difference at all between 105 and Tiagra. Weight and a slightly nicer design is probably the sum total, but there isn't much weight difference.

Later Tiagra levers have trimming too.
Actually as a point, it would seem on direct comparison that the 2012 105 = 2013 Tiagra

which is what normally happens ? The higher end stuff will make its way down the line eventually. Electronic shifting will makes its way down soon!

..... and breath.

I'm a little confused by your post. Why have you even bought a new bike if the old one was running so sweet, especially as money is so tight?

I mean, while I'm not hooked on the detail and model of each bike that's available I get the general impression that a 105 equipped bike usually starts at around £900-£1000. That's a lot of money for someone who can't afford to waste £150.

IMO you are angry at yourself for getting sucked into buying something you probably knew you didn't need and couldn't justify paying for. Coming on here swearing and shouting about it isn't going to help or make you look clever. I suggest you get out for a ride while the sun is shining (it is here anyway) and enjoy your new bike rather than sulking about it. You may feel a lot better if you do?

I apologise for rant but ive been reading these forums and god knows what else over the minutiae of different specs, components, frame materials etc and the supposed benfits but the reality doesnt match the virtues espoused of higher end stuff
Ive ridden 2300 and sora which admittedly was poor but id recommend going no further up the food chain than Tiagra,no point
Reguarding my finances, well its a Carbon bike a bought which i had set my heart on and im just a little disappointed at the fantastical tales i have read dont match the reality,my old bike was just a knock about winter hack and i just wanted a proper race bike which overall im very happy with
i'll see how it goes

I think we've all had that feeling mind you. I know I have.

Whenever I've had a new bike I expect it to make me better and to feel the benefit of the new expensive and higher spec parts immediately but have always been disappointed. I usually end up feeling I've taken a step backwards and that I was quicker on my old bike.

A few rides later you start to feel the benefits...
