Shimano indexing requires Shimano cassette?

Is a Shimano indexed shifter only compatible with Shimano cassettes?

it works with SRAM cassettes as well, the spacing is identical

A few companies make shimano-compatable cassettes. I'd almost go so far as to say that any new cassette will work with Shimano unless it's specifically sold as Campag.
