I bought a pair of cycling shoes from Lidl last week with the SPD connector in the sole.

I'm now looking to team them up with a set of PSD pedals. I have a Carrera subway hybrid from Halfords.

The pedals I have in mind are Shimano PDM540 MTB SPD Bike Pedals. I have a pedal spanner free with a recent magazine and would be confident enough changing over the pedals but wanted to be sure that they'll work with the Carrera??

Yes, they'll be fine. Remember that one side is reverse threaded though....YouTube can help here!

The Shimano PD-M540 doesn't have any flats for a spanner - you need an 8mm allen key, and a crankset with a pedal thread right through the crankarms (most, I suspect).

The cheaper (and somewhat heavier) PD-M520 does have flats for a standard spanner.

You may as well get these at a stupid price from Evans:

There is virtually no real world difference between these and the 540's. Weight difference is 25g which is neither here nor there.

They are used by masses of people (inc' me) and they chug on forever.

You can also get them in black which might look nice on your bike.

I have those pedals on 2 of my bikes and cant fault them for the money.

I make the weight difference 68g (the pair) - but would agree that they're sound pedals - especially for the price.

I thought it was 25g but even at 68g it is not exactly going to change much for the end user - I think that's about a slice of corned beef!

The Carrera Subway is a nice beginner bike but we aren't talking sub 7kg racing steed - I wouldn't pay £12 extra to save 68g (or whatever).
