I always struggle doing weekly shopping by bike. Pannier bag is not so good to carry heavy items like, 2 bottles 4 pints of milk, several cartons of fruit juices. Then there is a problem of not squashing fruit and vegetables. After thinking about it for some time, today I carried shopping in a box (foldable crate) on the rack. It worked well.
Now I feel like taking this box on a tour rather than having pannier bags. It look very practical.

I like it. Only issue I can see is stuff falling out (I'd over pack lol) You can get those boxes with lids....keep the rain out too

Yes, over packing was a problem but still managed to put everything in.
The advantage of this box is that it can be folded flat. Therefore when it is empty, it is easy to carry the flat pack.

I've seen a local rider who used a wire basket like this and permanently fixed his to the rack with small hose fixings. He then plops the carrier bags in the basket and ties up the loops.

Online I saw a rider use straps/canvass over the top to keep it all in, and another who adapted a rectangular basket in place of a pannier bag. Quite a lot you can do. Several; riders on here have built their own trailers that can hold about 3-4 carrier bags

I have 3 options for dealing with shopping
1 - have the wife do it this covers 99% of the issue.
2 - Have burley Travoy (much like a golf pull cart) covers 80 % of the remaining 1 %
3 - I also have a Chariot child carrier this could be used to haul just about everything except children as my youngest is 15..
