That's quite a tough drive. I assume there is no flying or train option? If driving is the only option why not just hire a vehicle 3 or 4 times a year? That's got to be cheaper and less stuff parked up at home too. As for falling asleep in a car - I can't, even in the most comfortable rides I've been in. So in a way you are quite lucky in that respect.

Have you thought about a Superb? Not quite the cache of a BM but probably as comfy and capable, not to mention bigger in the bike carrying dept if you get the estate. Creamy V6 as well if you want that bit extra, and can afford the depreciation hit on the engine choice. (though big discounts could probably be negotiated )

the big V6 is really weak in the mid-range compared to the turbo charged 3l BMW unit, in terms of refinement is barely better than a well sorted 159 SW let alone a competitor to the 5 series & dynamically is a barge at best... some might say a super tanker.

We'd need to hire one for the entire time we're there as well which gets expensive quickly. It also leaves the problem of motorsport/track day support vehicle.

We used not to & so needed to add another day on the mainland segment. With repeated trips we can now sleep & so can do the whole mainland segment in one day.

I hope you have gone diesel, our you'll need a mobile fuel tanker to follow you. A mate had a 4.0 X5 and the fuel was fill the car or pay the mortgage. They have an economical golf now.

So we managed to get 33.1mpg out of a 550i GT M Sport over 900 miles, which for a turbo charged 4.4l V8 is epic considering it was towing another car for about 50% of those miles.

The OP is a bit of a petrol head. He could buy an awful lot of very nice bikes still have lots in the bank for the huge amount he appears to spend on luxury cars. How about a motorhome/camper van? Somewhere to sleep and carry your bikes with ease, you wouldn't even have to ride them.

Actually I'm not going to miss it. We'll be looking at the less powerful 6 pot engine in the 5 series GT if we go in that direction.

The V8 does drink deeply, too deeply for my tastes, as a big forced induction V8 it's not ludicrously thirsty. Go back 5-10 years and a large family estate with a 2.0l N/A engine would be delivering that sort of economy. I'm not talking about headline economy, I'm talking about real world fuel economy.

Police - poor financially, no? If it's to do with their often pi$$ poor performance when reporting incidents of cyclists being endangered/knocked down by morons in cars then I would suggest it is very relevant to be posted here, but full octane petrol headed car stuff that should appear on Pistonheads then well …………… one might decide it's a step too far given this is a cycling forum, but then I'm not a mod. Just saying.
