I cycle mostly in normal sports shorts, with a little discomfort but nothing bad.
So as im getting more into this cycling lark im looking at more cycle specific gear.
Im not so into the whole lycra look but i can understand what the shorts are for, the padding for comfort, stretchy material to avoid chaffing and are breathable.

But what are the bib shorts for, what extra do the shoulder strap bits give? It seems to me that you wouldn't get any benefit between the shorts and the bib shorts.
Bib longs i take it are for colder weather?

The shoulder straps save having an elasticated waistband & are more comfortable IMHO
You are right about bib longs or bib tights being for colder weather (or those afraid to bare their legs in public  )

Bibs are very much more comfortable than waist band shorts - I haven't bought a pair of the latter since getting my first pair of bibs.
