You can do anything you like as long as it's after the water company's stop cock. I used one that gave a pulse per ten litres and hooked it up to a miniature data logger so I could see what was going on and fiddle about with the data on my PC. It was a while ago and I think I've lost the data file. Anyway, it very quickly showed that for us three, a water meter would have been a very bad deal indeed.

I don't think any effort should be expended on attempting to reduce domestic consumption by installation of meters etc, until the water companies start to make serious inroads into their own leaks and wastage. Up to a third of the UK pumping capacity is lost through leaks in the network, yet they twiddle their thumbs and fanny about with meters. Maximising return for shareholders takes priority.

This is very much a UK phenomenon. The government are skint, so instead of getting big business and the wealthy to pay their rightful billions in unpaid tax, they clamp down on the disabled to save a few hundred million instead.

I could go on, this kind of attention to irrelevant minutiae while the big picture is willfully ignored just boils my wee wee. Fiddling while Rome burns - the UK way.

I also railed against a meter because (and not very scientific i admit) my FIL had one fitted and now goes to (to me anyway) ridiculous extremes to save water, water butts everywhere,(quite a significant initial cost)....he moans everytime someone uses the bath and insists they shower and wait for it....on one occasion even suggested we didnt flush the toilet if we had a wee. (if you didnt guess it, he is a bit of a control freek)
FFS, if his wife was peeved before, she nearly blew a gasket when he said that

No way am i becoming a slave to the water companies while i can afford the alternative (no meter).

Had a meter fitted when I moved into my present house some 30 years ago. At that time water was calculated as a percentage of your house rates. I can't remember the figures now but even with two adults and three kids our bill reduced to about one third of what it was.
The old chap next door was probably using a piddling amount but refused to get a meter installed. Even when I showed him what we paid.
Off hand I'm not sure what we pay for water but I have never limited my use because of the meter.

You could time how long it takes to fill the sink using the shower, to see if more or less water would be used.

Blimey, I live in a similar house to yours and my monthly (10) bill is £43.
My son who lives on his own had a meter fitted a couple of months back and his bill has gone down by £12 per month.

I know, before we moved into this house about 15 years ago, we were not on a meter and were paying £43.00 mth.
As @matiz says, we pay towards this scheme and that scheme so as to provide clean water for folk who visit our area.
I don't agree that we should just shut up and suck it up because we have chosen to live in the south west. A lot of us were born and bred here and fight tooth and nail in the struggle to stay within our family circles and local communities.
Here in the Torridge area, we are said to be a low income area with few social perks. But it is our home.
