"Side Car" Bicycle ???

A few days ago I was watching some "short" films on the German/French TV channel ARTE. One of the films caught my attention, not so much the story but the bike one of the kids was riding, a bike with a side car. It definitely wasn't a tricycle. Anyone come across this? Maybe it was just a fad aimed at kids?

my first cycling experience was in a side car on the side of my parents tandem. I was six months old.

Klauss ... every year we have an annual 25 mile cycle ride to raise money for the Devon Air Ambulance Trust, the route involves 9 pub stops and fancy dress is optional but some of the bikes that arrive are amazing including this old tandem with sidecar

Ms RT's dad has a 1950s Claud Butler tandem complete with period sidecar. Among many other interesting classic bikes.
