I am going to pick up my hybrid giant city escape w later today and am worried about the size! I have been ordered a medium but on any size guides I can find it says that for my height (5'4) I should be S? Can anyone advise? I'm sure it will be ok to swap at bike shop but I want some idea in my head before I get there because it was them that ordered the M? Its so difficult to be sure :-( (if u couldnt tell already, I am new!)

I would go for small. I ride medium or medium/large bikes and I'm 5ft 10.

I was thinking that would be the case, looks like I'll need to wait a bit longer to take it home

All bikes are different. Only real way you can find out is to test ride before ordering. If you have had bikes a while you can generally figure out what size is correct by measuring the lengths of some of the tubes on the bike frame... Good luck!

I think Giant size their Lady's bikes differently to their men's.
My girlfriend has exactly the same bike and is 5'5" she's been very impressed with the bike since the day she got it and she's found it very comfortable during long rides (60 miles)

did she have the medium frame then? I think I am just so worried because I don't really know what I'm looking for or how I should feel!

She has the medium frame. It's a Giant Escape 3 W (hers isn't the City version but the bikes are the same minus the mudguards).
As I said, she's 5'5" and the seat post doesn't have to be set low in the frame.
This is a really poor quality photo but as you can see the seat is set fairly high......

Hers is the green one closest in the picture, mine is the silver one (same bike but men's frame).

Hi, it was absolutely perfect - no need to worry about a thing! They had a small and a medium ready and let me go a ride on both and the medium was the one I went with. I love it! Just need to get a bit more confident with the busy roads now - was a scary ride to work this morning!

Well done to you and the LBS, always right to make sure you are happy with the frame size before you commit.

If you find yourself a little uneasy in traffic then take a look at our city commuting guide, its packed with helpful hints.

Glad you got it sorted.
A common thing I've seen a lot of people do when they're not too confident is to set the seat low down so that they can reach the ground easily with both feet. This is OK to start with and does indeed help build up your confidence but it's not a very comfortable (or efficient) riding position in the long run.
Buying this bike massively improved my girlfriends cycling ability and enjoyment and once I'd convinced her to raise the saddle up to the proper riding position it also meant she could then keep up with me rather more easily than I'd have liked
