EDIT - plus you can subscribe to other calendars so I get school holidays for example. And I maintain two calendars (one work, one personal) and that also works well.

You can subscribe to other calendars with most shared calendaring systems I'm subscribed to UKHolidays for bank holidays, which I think is hosted by the Mozilla project.

I would be extremely reluctant to discuss any sensitive topics with someone who put my personal details on Google.

No, you've broadened that from "discuss any sensitive topics" to "deal with".

Also, you don't have to connect Android phones to Google.
