I left my plastic mac hanging around while we ate a curry, and now it stinks of it. The washing instructions say not to wash it so I've given it a rub with a soapy cloth and left it out to air and it still stinks of curry. Any tips on handling the problem? It's a really cheapie one, thick plastic, the kind that gets condensation in the sleeves while you're wearing it. I'd rather not buy a new one though, I quite like it.

If it's just cheap plastic, I can't see what harm washing it will do. I'd bung it in the machine at 30deg C.

If in any doubt about washing anything, first try hand washing it in cold water with something like Grangers goretex cleaning liquid. If you don't have any of that to hand, then Lux pure soap flakes has never destroyed anything of mine!

Regular washing detergents, especially if biological, can destroy coatings and membranes.

why can't you wash it???? that sounds stupid to me? what... are they worried you will get it wet???

just put it on a cold wash with some Lux flakes (which are pure soap not detergent) and i reckon it will be fine.

Disclaimer: if it goes wrong it's not my fault

Plastics have a good ability to absorb odour molecules; it's why your nylon or PP cycling top smells so strongly of washing powder after a wash, or so strongly of sweat after a ride!

Just wash it, it will be fine. Then air it.

Lux soap flakes for me too - or Boots own brand pure soap flakes are the same thing. I use on all my hi-tech modern gear and have never had any problems. I just 1/4 fill the bath(with a medical thermometer to check temp stays below 30 degrees C), put in the flakes, then mix till desolved, add clothing and wash.

They(soapflake) seem to be becoming harder to find - none in my ASDA or TESCO.

So just use a bar of soap, it's the same thing.
