Smelly

There is a chap in our office who has started commuting, there is no where for his kit to go so it is placed around his desk, including his cycling shoes. As the weather is getting better the smell is getting worse! I walked in this morning and nearly gagged at the stink.

How do I confront this? The company will not do anything to provide any facilities so that is a no go.

What do other commuters do?

i was going to start commuting this year but this has put me off.

It is his whole kit that needs moving somewhere, especially his cycling shoes, after a 20 mile commute his kit smells, I don't think it is him

It's simple - washing your kit regularly will mitigate smells.

Not exactly rocket science is it?
Wash the kit every day.
Put the shoes in a plastic bag at work and make sure you are clean before you set out.

When I first started commuting I could shower and change at work and leave the kit in a locker. I moved jobs, and upped the daily mileage from 24 to 32, and the new job didn't have any special facilities. <br>I'm asthmatic and can't tolerate most deodorant sprays. So, I changed in the large gents toilet area and washed my face and under my arms before work. All the kit, except a waterproof if I'd worn one, went into a bag under my desk. The bag, a small towel and some soap lived at work in my drawer.

If, as you say, it isn't him that smells (and some people have terrible trouble with body odour no matter how much they wash), rather his kit, then just ask him to put it all in plastic bags and hide it under the desk. Say something like .. "Wow, just must be working hard on your commute, I'm impressed, but maybe you could put your kit in some bags rather than leaving it draped over the place ?"

If he can't wash them every couple of days, and some people can't cause they only have 1 of each item, then ask him to put it all in a large shopping bag.

At least the smell will be limited to the bag and not the rest of the work space

I will see if I can get a big resealable bag from our warehouse and tell him to keep his shoes in it. Today is the first day this week he has cycled in so I'd like to think his kit was clean!!!

If you have a warehouse surely there must be a changing area that you your colleague can stash his kit if not in the warehouse itself.

Wot everyone else said. And ref the shoes, get him to have two pairs and alternate them so they get a proper chance to dry out each day.
