So, as a car driver, how did I do with the group of cyclists? VIDEO

OP, what was the point of your thread? Was it an ego boost, praise, a piece of cake or Brownie points?

Hi, thanks for your comment - none of that. I am just posting to see what others think of the driving and the environment as no matter how many years of driving you do, you're STILL learning!

I have driven for about 10 years and I think it's the first time that I have come across a bunch of cyclists on a narrow & windy road so I was looking for feedback about my drivings for this, so...what's wrong with that?

I have been reading with interest about the blackbox in this thread.

Personally, I would not agree to have one fitted in my car because it's not 100% smart enough to recognise why it's giving me bad points just because I braked hard when a child runs across the road from a hidden corner. Or when a lorry blew a tyre on a motorway and I had to accelerate hard to get away from the lorry before it hit me?

Until the technology is 100% perfect, I would not want it in my car.

Reading some of the negative replies Tony got for this makes me wonder just what some people want on the roads?

Look at Tony's channel and you'll see he is clearly a careful, considerate, experienced and FORWARD THINKING driver. Sadly he's a minority, but to me anyway a very welcome one.

You can't please everyone, sadly. If you do it wrong, they will burn you. If you do it right, they will still burn you anyway by being picky. Like this video for example.

Thanks for your comment.

Although it might not tell the insurers that it will tell them if it happened a lot at just the hours after the pubs shut, which of course is some of the information they are after.

I would say if your insurers offered it to you on the guarantee that it would only save you money not cost you any more your mind might change.

If is see a clip that I'd like to comment on, but the majority of previous comments are by trolls, it really puts me off commenting. As the video putter upper, why not just delete the trolls comments?

I agree that the driving was good (already said so upthread). There were some slightly snotty replies, but the consensus seemed positive. There will always be nitpicking.

I have to say I find the majority of motorists careful, thoughtful and courteous.

Having said that, I had a nice fright on Friday when was descending at 30+ in a 30 and a little old lady whipped past me, close and at speed and then braked and indicated right. My heart was almost in my mouth, partly because I was riding fixed so slowing from speed seems to unsettle the bike more. It was one of those moments when you want to swear or say something cool, but you just make weird "Weeerrr-oooo-aarrr" noises of terror.

That close pass and those brake lights on a slippery descent are my abiding memory of Friday's ride, but I was passed by scores of other motorists in 35 mileswho were polite, careful and skilled. I forgot them.

Insurance is gambling, in reverse. Car insurance being one of the odd ones where it is mandatory.

Would you gamble say £100 a year (on insurance savings) that this year a small child wont run out infront of you? I would!

Even a sharp braking incident may not massively change your premium if the other 99.9% your driving fits the insurance companies 'good' driver norms.

I usually ignore them and in a few cases, I do go into discussion with them, and they usually give up at the end when they cannot backup the useless/rubbish facts they posted.

And to why I don't delete them, unless it's really bad comment, I leave them so they will look silly themselves plus I do not believe in deleting comments unless at least last restort.

Still a no for me thanks, while they are not compulsory. The boxes and polices that go with them aren't track day friendly, there are terms in the policy about fiddling with them and trying to turn them off. I guess a lot of people would like to seem them on motorcylces too as we all know they are crazy speed freaks constantly doing wheelies through our nice quiet villages. While we are at it, why not put them on all vehicles that use the road to make sure people aren't exceeding committee-approved levels of risk. How about one on your bicycle that warns you when your going too fast and leaning over too much in a corner? "Nonsense!" you say, "I'm perfectly capable of deciding what's safe". And that's the point.

Yes I know there's a difference in severity of consequences of someone getting the blood pumping cycling fast and someone hooning about in a car but I think the point is valid. It truly saddens and exasperates me - some people can't be trusted to use something as dangerous as a car in a sensible way, therefore we have to monitor and micromanage that activity and it and basically completely sterilise something that a lot of people, myself included, derive a lot of pleasure from - the kick in the back from a powerful car and nailing your driving technique (and I don't just mean driving fast) is extremely satisfying. I'm in full wine fuelled rant mode now but if the boring people get their way in the future we will have virtual reality "adrenaline booths" were you go to get a fix of risk-taking because its just too dangerous to do in the real world as there's a 0.0001% chance you might hurt yourself or someone else.

My fairly well-reasoned argument was going quite well until the end of the last paragraph, I just need a bit more time and discussion to get my entire universal philosophy straight but I'm almost there!

I'll say one more thing: Get out in the snow tomorrow and enjoy taking a bit of a risk. Yank the handbrake and slide gloriously into your parking spot like a hero at work. Jump the last 3 steps on your way downstairs. Or remain motionless in bed and miss out on life.

regards,

Dave
