...I'm fat. Decanting a packet of spaghetti into the jar today, for the first time I looked at the packet to see how much they recommend per person, and then weighed it out. (I tend to judge by the handful)

I've regularly cooking nearly twice as much, and that's cut down from what I used to cook!:?:

I know exactly what you mean. But I personally think suggested portion sizes are targetted at dwarfs on a diet, or young children. They never seem anywhere near enough!

I know! My main problem is that I really like the pasta, more so than whatever sauce goes on it...

I may try weighing out the recommended portion next time, but I think I better make sure I have some bread and butter handy in case I'm still hungry!

I find that grasping the biggest portion and putting it into the boiling water is the best idea Arch. Hold on to one end, wait until it is soft, take it all out and put a nice half hitch through the strands.

Then it is definitely knot fattening.
Add sauce.
And hard cheese.

BTW, I even have a poncy way of putting it in the water, I saw in on a jamie Oliver programme. Rather than just laying it all to one side and letting it bend in, take the handful, twist it slightly, hold it vertically in the pan of water, touching the base, make sure the slight twist is still there, and let go. With a bit of luck, it all fans out around the edge of the pan (and then settles in as the ends soften). My sister and I both do it now, and it impresses my Mum no end.

I take no notice whatsoever of "recommended" portion sizes on packets--they are not aimed at people im sure.

A "family size" gateaux i bought from Asda the other day said on the box that it served 12. 12 what I dont know....mice i presume, as I could only get 4 slices out of it:biggrin:

We stopped for cake at the weekend while out walking in the hills, and the girl that served us made a choice that was simply stunning. There was about 1/4 of a big coffee cake/gateau left and when we asked for two pieces (thinking she would slice two slivers off it) she instead cut the thing in half and gave us a chunk each. They bent the paper plates as I carried them to a bench, they were so heavy. Needless to say, we did not eat anything else until suppertime!

We often make a rice pud... the recipe say it's for 12, but our family of 5 has gobbled it down in minutes... recipe for 12, my aunt fanny! 12 blimmin' supermodels in the middle of a bulimic phase, no doubt.
Mind you, I eat for England, and I'm not exactly a porker... the family keep mentioning how much I put away, then I remind them that my cycling mileage demands calorific compensation.

Recommended serving of cereal is 30g. 30g? have you seen how little that really is? Right I'm off to the pawn shop to get my shotgun back.

My problem is that with all the extra time I'm having to spend in work at the moment I don't get any time for cycling. Still eating a cyclist's diet though. I buy 500g backs of spaghetti, which the packet suggests should provide 6-8 servings and I'm lucky if I get 3 servings.

Bought a couple of pairs of Trousers from M&S last weekend, had to take them back this weekend as there was no way on earth I was going to fit in them. A year ago I took a 32" waist, now I'm up to 36". I have to get out more

I was served the biggest wedge of Lemon Drizzle Cake I've ever seen, on Sunday. It was especially surprising, since I associate lemon drizzle with a loaf shaped cake, and this was round. And the wedge was massive! (And the cake itself a touch stodgy. I certainly didn't need anything else until 7ish...

I overestimated how much red cabbage to cook last night with my sausages and mash, so I scooped some off the plate until it looked like a more normal portion. Result: a whole other portion to use up!
