On the road it's got to be fixed. Climbing hills is much easier on a fixie and that outweighs the advantage of being able to freewheel downhill.

but it means stopping and fettling
I used to service top end exercise bikes at gyms some years ago,pretty sure these had
an electromagnetic clutch to alter the resistance for riding,I'm pretty sure
somebody could come up with some sort of variation on the theme,whereby
the clutch would operate normally as fixed most of the time,then with a flick
of a switch you could freewheel, mind you you'd have to watch it switching back
to fixed, from 0-180 instantly
some sort of soft start would be needed.
Looks like modern groupsets are going electronic whether people want it or not,
so some boffin somewhere is probably working on this as we speak

Looks interesting. I wonder how much freeplay there is, if any at all. If it didn't feel completely fixed I think it would spoil the experience of riding fixed for me.
Different topic, but I've heard the 3 speed fixed hub has a lot of freeplay/backlash. Has anyone on here tried one?
