Hi,

I started cycling a little over a year ago and I absolutely love it. I inherited a decent road bike and I use it to travel everywhere. I live in London and it has become my means of transport and I have developed into a good competent rider. However, the bike I use has had its time and I’m ready to purchase a new one. I’m not entirely sure where to start though - I would greatly appreciate some advice. It’s a little daunting when researching and I want to make sure I pick the right bike, I don’t earn a lot of money and so it has taken me a while to save up £500 (my budget).

I know what I want in a bike but is there anything I should make sure I have in a road bike? Can anyone recommend some good stores in London? Are there particular models I should go for/stay clear of? Also I am doing my first triathlon in the summer and I start my training soon – hence the need for a new bike – and one that will be sufficient for such an event.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

I think for £500 from a shop, the b twin 5 from decathlon is hard to beat. There's a store at Canada water. For £500 I think you'd be looking at a 2013 model with sora gearing and a carbon fork

Otherwise, see what cyclesurgery or Evans have for your budget in their sale. They have several stores each in and around the centre. Evans are very good for test rides

Also look at the giant offerings, there is a store near St. Paul's. You've also got ash cycles out East who do good deals on outgoing giant models

Where in London are you? Someone can probably suggest somewhere local too

If leaving it anywhere in London, if you don't already get yourself one of the top d locks and a secondary cable or chain and insurance

Just to add to @vickster very valid quote, I live in Manchester & if leaving my bike (which I wouldn't) I would take my saddle & seatpost into work with me !!

Also - have you got C2W scheme available to you through work ?

This could push your budget out a little & bag yourself a better specced bike for the same or less money.
(Salary sacrifice) avoid tax & n.i contributions on the bike.

Good Luck Hunting.
