Idle curiosity found me looking at a listing in 'For sale' for some Fulcrum 3 wheels, now available because 'I've just found some Fulcrum 1s at a price I couldn't resist, so I've upgraded'. £250 to you, John. Blimey, thinks I, that's the pre-upgrade ones, second hand?

Never having heard of either, but also never having paid anywhere near £250 for a bike, let alone wheels,  I google, to find Fulcrum 1s. According to chainreaction cycles, they've 'been slimmed down by a full 50 grams'. A full 50 grams! Imagine that. And only £719.99. You get both for that. Front and back. That's 100 grams off altogether! Wow.

Mad. Bonkers. Deeeeee-ranged!

You know what they say about wheels ... what comes round, goes round.

for that price, i'd want an integrated energy management system, that keeps all that energy when i brake/go down hill

and gives it me back going uphill

or a motor

Why: My wheels are not that price, but I certainly do not think that people I ride with are 'bonkers, mad' for paying more than that for a pair of wheels. Many people have hobbies, some smoke cigarettes, drink too much etc etc. How someone spends their earnings is their decision. If you race, 100 grams is a lot in your wheel and saving this may make you more competitive.

But ...

As Gavintc says there are more expensive ways to waste spend money.

I'd expect the rest of the bike as well for that money, but if someone is fit, in training and good they may well benefit from the 100g reduction and very high performance and if they can afford it good luck to them. I'd critcise spending that money on tobacco or booze but not on bike components.

You have to admit that there is a certain amount of 'bragging' that goes on on this site.

You know the type of thread I am talking about "As a newcomer to cycling I have £5000 to spend on a half decent'ish frame. Any ideas" ?

If you've got big money to spend on a bike or whatever, then fantastic.

Just keep it to yourself.

Are you suggesting that anyone with more than £100 to spend on a new bike is not welcome to ask advice?

I can't claim to have seen many off these type of threads either.

One of the things I like about cycling (and CC) is that it's open to all and there's generally a wide demographic mix. A bling bike is nice, but not what ultimately determines whether someone is a decent cyclist or more importantly a decent person.

Now, what's the best bike rack for a Porsche?

I'll shock you now..................

I have a set of wheels I bought over 10 years ago that cost £700 then ..... OMFG.................. Hed Jet's - alloy rim with a deep carbon faring and HOPE Titanium Hubs - light, fast and stupidly expensive..................... still have 'em..............

My 'best' bike has some rare Campag C Record Carbon Looks on it - 16 years old - cost £140 new THEN.....argh............. (only reason for Campag as Shimano DA were not "ARC" and my knees didn't like the DA pedals.............) PS - never needed to service them....awesome.....

That said, I haven't had any new bikes since then, until last year and got a fixed.

I'd happily buy a £7k bike, than I would a £10k car................ - but neither is happening anyway

I'm on the cheap end of the spectrum, my bike originally cost £159 two years ago but since then I've added more than that in upgraded bits for it. The only original parts left are the frame and wheels, with the wheels being next on the hit list.

A nice budget pair of Shimano MX315's will do nicely for under £80.

I don't drink or smoke, I'll only buy a new pair of jeans if they're on sale for a tenner or less, I've got work shirts that have lasted years and shoes that I've resoled a bunch of times, but I'll drop a half a grand on a pair of wheels easy. I've just had to replace my rear derailleur and the one I like is 200 quid a time. It's all about priorities and I'll put up with cheap crap elsewhere in my life as long as I can keep my bike running sweet!

Errr........... the advert for the wheels is mine (still for sale by the way). They are my daughter's wheels, and she now has the Fulcrum 1. Reason for swapping? The old ones are silver and the new ones are black, and look so much better on her BMC Pro Machine, kitted out with Campagnolo Record and Centaur. Worth about £3000.00

I/we can afford it. House is paid for, we live relatively frugally, don't smoke/drink/gamble. Buy cheap cars. Don't have expensive holidays every year (usually every other year though - camping in Italy, chalet in Sweden, camper van in Australia were the last three). Two of my children have left home. Third one is at uni, and lfourthr is on a gap year. No debts of any kind, I've saved at least 10% of my income every year.

My money, I'll spend it how I like.

What do you waste yours on?
