Someone has parked a bicycle in my space

Don't you find it annoying when you get into work and find out that someone has parked their bicycle in the space you use everday (apart from the days that someone else beats me to it (which isn't often)).

I shotgun my space by locking my lock in a position that means you can't use the rack as designed, but you can use it in another way. The guy that has beat me to it two days in a row locks his bike in a funny way, infact in such a way that it is not locked to the frame of the stand and is easily movable. A £1,200 bike at that as well.

Now some have mentioned to be in the past that they would let the tyres down, or change gear on the other bicycle to get back at the person that took their space. In this case I could easily move the bicycle to another stand.

But that isn't me, I'll just look for another space and fit my bike into it. Why am I so attached to the single rack anyway? Well, it's one that is easy to use as there is only one rack next to it, so I am able to easily lock my bike to the rack in a secure way. (the others you have to like squeeze through other bikes to get to the rack).

Gaz you need to start an anti cycling campaign to disuade others from cycling and therefor taking up your space in the cycle rack. As the weather gets warmer, start working on the benefits of air conditioning in cars.

We're a territorial species. We just need to rise above it and realise that unless you have bought the space it isn't yours. Props for not descending into sabotage, but is it really right to use your lock to reserve the space in such a way as to make it hard for others to use?
I can understand your preference for the nicer rack, but don't go thinking it's yours and being affronted by another person using it.

Strange, you see my first thought was, it's bang out of order leaving a lock in such a way as to make a stand difficult or hard to use for others. My next thought was someone should leave a note on your lock indicating if you persist it will be smashed off.

If you own the space then I apologise otherwise there's only one person in the wrong here.

I had a similar problem once, a space I had to get permission from the building supervisor to use.
Came in one morning and someone had locked a old bike in "my" place, they had to cycle past the bike shed, 50m away, to get to it.
A real pain since moving my chain to another place is not ideal as it weighs more than 7kg.
I know it is really petty but I bought a £5 MTB of EBay, no saddle and two flat tyres, and locked it in "my" place when I left in the evening.
Seemed to do the trick.

There's no such thing as 'your' space in a communal bike rack/shed until your bike is locked into it. The only time you might get away with this sort of grievance is if you know all the other users and you have an informal agreement to that effect (i.e - your bike goes here, his bike goes there etc...) and even then noobies and one off visitors might mess that up.

IMO its first come first served so get over it!

If you want real bike shed anger then how about the rusting, flat tyred, BSO hulks that are taking up space chained into slots that should be available to real cyclists. There's 2 or 3 at my place that look as if they have been there at least 18 months, not just through the winter waiting for the warmer weather to return....... In fact, when I go in next week I might see if something can be done about it.

Plenty of room in my office, no-one nicks my space.

At one site it can be a right pain to park sometimes as 80% of the sheffield stands are too close to the wall so I can't get my d-lock through the frame. The 'useable' spaces are often taken up, so it takes some jiggery pokery to get the bike secured.

I have two bikes, I leave one permanently locked to my favourite rack, and then just lock the bike I used to commute that day over the top of the other one. It works a treat.
If you don’t have two bikes yet, just buy a 50 squid pub bike… 50 quid over your commuting life really isn’t much to reserve your favourite place …
