Some colleagues organised a fundraising sumo wresting competition at school for staff and the kids made a contribution to charity to gain access to the gym to watch.

I thought that it would be a doddle until the sumo costumes arrived. I thought that they were going to be the cheap inflatable ones but they turned out to be heavily padded outfits with the emphasis on heavy.

I was the favourite and the first three opponents were dispatched with ease.

The Semi finals proved to be my undoing. In a best out of three I recovered from being one down but the second bout proved to be a monumental battle of strength and endurance and although I eventually won it I had to retire as my body overheated and I was close to passing out.

The annoying thing is is that my opponent was in a similar state and was actively considering throwing in the towel to but I beat him to it.

Two minutes in the fresh air and I was as right as rain.

I'm now aching from my exertions.

A curry and a beer will sort me out.

I used to enjoy watching it on Channel 4 when it was shown years ago. Seemed to be just as much a psychological as a physical battle.

You needed a costume vern?

They had to ask the hire company to bring a bigger custume for me.

I was willing to fight in my bib shorts but the au naturel appearance would have been too awesome to contemplate.

I'm now aching - it was more strenuous that I'd thought.

I've always enjoyed watching Sumo - the power is truly awesome. No-way would I be able to move a 20 stone opponent who doesn't want to move - vever mind pick them up and dump them!!

A friend of mine was on Channel 4s Strictly Lady Sumo (worth a look if it's still on catchup/download). The training leading up to the World Championships was really hard, but then she is a tough cookie. It was great fun along the corridors at work though.

Unfortunately, Japanese Sumo is in the midst of an almighty match-fixing scandal right now. The upcoming grand tournament has been cancelled, and the sport may never recover. It's already lost most of its Japanese fans, the general standard of competition is pretty low with little depth, and there are very few Japanese wrestlers who are any good these days (all the best ones are Mongolian, or even from Eastern Europe), and the majority of the fans are 'gaijin' too.

Wrestlers in match fixing, what has the world come to..?

Seriously though, I used to love Sumo as a kid. I hadnt a cvlue what was going on but it was dramatic and exciting. I seem to remember a Hawain called The Panda..? Or have I imagined that?
