Stagecoach - profiteers wih a good idea

Pah, it's a tough crowd tonight, nonetheless I remain steadfast and convinced that overcrowding increases the risk of some accident occurring (amongst the passengers) and should an emergency stop be made, or a collision, the crowded and confined carriages shall worsen whatever accidents occur amongst the passengers.

That said, we should be careful not to judge them all as a homogeneous mass, since it takes all sorts in a company, and a lot of them are very decent people. I guess it is like any company, generally we demonise those above as incompetent, reckless, and all the rest, and many around and below as idle, lazy, and power-hungry, but most are just trying to earn an honest living.

Moral of the story: encourage progressive innovation, and if you don't like the service complain directly to the company ;)

Overcrowding does increase the risk in an emergency stop (standing people fall over, possibly crush other people) but it hardly ever happens: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rail_accidents_in_the_United_Kingdom
2008: no deaths, 4 injuries
2007: 1 death, 22 injuries
2006: 1 death,
(This isn't counting level crossing suicides.)

"Train carrying 240 people hit a sleeper while travelling at 80 mph. No reported injuries."
"it was involved in the collision [with a car that had driven onto the line], at approximately 100 mph ... no injuries"

Now if we could get the government regulators (or whoever) to improve comfort as much as they've improved safety...
