Sowerby Bridge - Hill

Whats the name of the hill from Sowerby Bridge near the railway station up past the Hobbits' something or another pub? (On route 68 to Holmfirth.)

I was unfortunate enough to find myself trying to get a heaily laiden bike up there yesterday. It's the first hill in years thats defeated me!

It's taken a few chunks out of my rear tyre too where the wheel span, although sadly it was lack of fitness / power that prevented me getting up rather than lack of grip.

Scar Head!

It's a bit of a swine that one, but there are actually worse ones round here...

I went to see the pro riders go up it on the Leeds Classic in the early 90s. They were a bit overgeared for it. The best riders sprinted up it but the ones at the back were really grovelling!

Sprinted! - omg!

I put in some real effort to get up the first bit, thinking it was the top. It wasn't the top though, the road turned sharp left and went on climbing. My legs gave up, they just didn't have the power needed to get around that bend.

Just managed to find the location on streetmap thanks to your scar-head. I think it was the next street along, Boggard Lane. It was the turn into Sowerby Croft lane that was my downfall.

Early 90s - no EPO test available!

I'm sure that you did go up Boggard Lane, but I think that whole hillside is called Scar Head (yep - just confirmed on my 1:25,000 OS map).

I've only climbed it once and found it tough even with my triple chainset and 28 sprocket.

I also did two of the climbs / fells that are on the ride your doing on the 26th. They were enough to give me serious second thoughts about attempting 100miles in that area!

Ah, but you were towing a load then!

It definitely is a hilly route but we will be riding pretty slowly and we will have a couple of cafe stops to refuel and rest.
