So my road bike has spd's and my commuter ( also a road bike but with mudguard's and rack ) has flats, tempted to try spd's on my commuter, who else rides spd's on there commute ?

My ride to work is a mixture of town, cycle paths and country lane's and nearly 5 miles.

I chose flats but I haven't been converted to spds yet so my opinion may not count for much.

SPD on everything for me.

I struggle to ride without them now. I would say, that for a town commute I would consider MTB pedals as they as easier to clip in and pit of and I feel they are a little more robust ....although they creak a bit more from my experience and for longer rides (100 miles Plus) MTB pedals definitely cause me some numbness on the ball of my foot and in my outer toes.

For a commute, you cant beat em

Ive been riding spd's on the road bike for a few months now but when im on the commuter my feet feel all over the pedals.

Anyway ive fitted the spd's onto the commuter to try it out.

I put Shimano A530s on my Brompton. SPD one side, flat the other. So I can pop down the shops in my trainers or do more serious stuff in my cycling shoes. IMHO SPD on the right pedals are worth their weight in urban areas - just for being able to pull up and prime the pedal at traffic lights for a lightening getaway.

I'm still on a quest for the holy grail of commuting pedals. Two sided, SPD or other 2-bolt cleat, with amber pedal reflectors. I'm not sure whether such a thing even exists, but if it does, it shall be mine.

That is the pedals im using at the moment as ive just got into using spd's. I'll see how i get on with them and may leave them on and upgrade the road/weekend bike.

I have some of these from EBC and they'll go on bike when and if I decide to commute.

Didn't get on with SPD's as I found the insert pressure and release tension was all over the place (but then they are cheap pedals at the end of the day).

Changed to Mavic Crossroc SL pedals , that use the Time Atak cleats and love them (although I would put replace the Look Keo's on my good bike with them!). Last time I used flats was on a borrowed bike and I really didn't like them.

It's all down to personal choice though.

Good, big (to avoid hot foot), rubber tread (to avoid slips) flat pedals are the best IMO. If you're not racing, you don't need the effectiveness-for-efficiency trade of clipless with the risk of zero mph falls.
